Russia is prepared to divert crude oil supplies to India to offset disruptions in West Asia, with around 9.5 million barrels of Russian crude already on vessels near Indian waters that could arrive within

weeks, according to a report by news agency Reuters.

Russian officials on Tuesday told the news agency that they are prepared to support India with energy supplies if disruptions occur. The conflict, started on Saturday with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, has showed no signs of abating as it entered its fifth day with loud blast rocking several Western Asian cities.

Indian government officials said the country currently holds sufficient crude and fuel inventories to meet domestic demand for petrol, diesel and other fuels for six to eight weeks. They added that New Delhi is scouting alternative sources for importing crude oil, liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied natural gas in case the conflict in West Asia lasts beyond 10 to 15 days.

Around 40% of India’s crude imports move through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. The passage has become difficult to access after vessels were struck by Iranian attacks that followed U.S. and Israeli strikes on targets in Iran, Reuters said in its report.

The report by the news agency also citing people from the oil refining industry who said that Indian refiners are in regular contact with traders selling Russian crude.

US President Donald Trump last month agreed to drop punitive tariffs levied on imports from India over its purchase of Russian oil, saying New Delhi had agreed to “stop buying Russian oil.” India has not done so, insisting its strategy was to diversify supply in line with market conditions and “evolving international dynamics.”

The people mentioned above said that any “increase in intake from Moscow would depend on guidance from the government as trade talks with the United States continue”.
