Large parts of north India continue to shiver under an intense cold wave, with freezing temperatures reported across several states. On Monday, January 12, the outskirts of Gurgaon, Haryana recorded a temperature of minus

1.0 degrees Celsius, with layers of ice forming on the ground, according to reports. The ice formed due to dew freezing in sub-zero conditions.

Open areas across Delhi NCR, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab also saw icy layers as temperatures dropped sharply. While the minimum temperature is usually between 1.5 and 2.5 degrees Celsius, it was around 3 degrees Celsius at 7 am.\n

People share experiences on social media

Many people took to X to share their reactions to the extreme cold. One user wrote, “Hope it snows!” Another said, “Min of 1.1 with frost in Sainik Farms, New Delhi.”

A third user claimed, “It was -3 in Chhatarpur last night.” Others reported even colder conditions, with one user stating that Fatehpur in Rajasthan recorded minus 3.7 degrees Celsius.

Several users also expressed a wish for snowfall in Delhi NCR.

No relief as fog and cold persist in North India

There is no respite from the biting cold across north India. Cold wave conditions and dense fog continue to affect daily life, transport and travel. Chilly winds, falling temperatures and poor visibility have disrupted normal routines in many areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of dense to very dense fog during morning hours in many regions over the coming days.

According to the IMD, Uttar Pradesh may see dense to very dense fog till January 13, with dense fog likely till January 18. Bihar is expected to experience dense to very dense fog till January 12 and dense fog till January 17. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi may face dense fog during morning hours till January 17.

Other regions, including Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, may see dense fog till January 16. West Rajasthan could face fog till January 13, while east Rajasthan, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may see fog till January 14. Parts of the northeast may also experience dense fog on January 14.

Cold wave alert

The IMD has said that moderate to severe cold wave conditions are likely to intensify in the coming days. Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may face severe cold waves, while Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh could see cold to severe cold conditions in isolated areas.

Delhi remains under an orange alert for Monday. The IMD has warned of cold wave conditions at many places, along with shallow to moderate fog in the morning. The minimum temperature in the capital may fall to between 2 and 4 degrees Celsius, while the maximum is expected to remain around 18 to 20 degrees Celsius.
