Sharing the theme on social media, Vogue wrote, “On Monday, May 4, guests at the 2026 Met Gala will celebrate ‘Costume Art’, the spring exhibition at the Met Museum’s Met Costume Institute. But what will they wear? The Met Gala dress code for this year is ‘Fashion is Art.’”

The caption further explained that the ‘Fashion Is Art’ theme allows attendees to express their relationship to fashion as an embodied art form. “The directive perfectly reflects the ethos of ‘Costume Art’, which explores the ‘centrality of the dressed body’ through depictions and interpretations of the human form in the Met’s extensive collection,” the caption added.

\n According to the Associated Press, Andrew Bolton, the curator of the museum’s Costume Institute, suggested the dress code, selected for maximum flexibility. He said, “Hopefully, it will put an end to the rather obsolete ‘Is Fashion Art?’ debate once and for all.”

What To Expect From This Year’s Met Gala?

With such an open-ended dress code, fans can expect to witness plenty of storytelling. The theme leaves much room for drawing inspiration from ancient art to modern times, including a unique blend of modern styles with futuristic mixes and reimaginations of retro styles with avant-garde designs.

Additionally, more than 400 items are expected to be on display, including paintings, archival designs, and clothing from the Costume Institute’s Collection. As per Bolton, the historical and contemporary pieces will be put on display from 5000 years of art history.
