Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday mocked the electoral drubbing of the Congress across the country, saying the “enlightened citizens” of India had taught them a lesson for opposing the country’s development.

“Since the past four decades, Indians have been teaching the Congress a lesson. If the media analyses, they will realise that there is no vote chori. Instead, the people of the country do not think them worthy of voting them to power. This trend began after 1984 itself. In 1984, Congress got 39 per cent votes and more than 400 seats. But in the elections after that, the votes only kept reducing. And today the situation is such that they are limited to only four states that have more than 50 elected representatives.

“In the past 40 years, the share of young voters kept increasing and Congress kept getting decimated. The Congress has been reduced to a club of nepotism. This is why, earlier millennials and now Gen-Z are teaching a lesson to the party.”

He added: “In a democracy, the role of the Opposition is not just about blind opposition, but about presenting an alternative vision.”
