bat in India’s victorious pursuit, scoring an unbeaten 97 to guide the defending champion to the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals.

It was Sanju’s third innings in the T20 World Cup, and he was right on the money, just when the team needed him the most. Sanju sealed India’s victory with a boundary, went down on his knees, took off his helmet and thanked the Almighty with folded hands. His knock of 97 not-out, peppered with 12 fours and 4 sixes, is the highest score by an Indian batter in a successful chase in T20 World Cups.

“It means the whole world, actually, to me. I think right from the day I started playing, I started dreaming of playing for the country. I think this is the day I was waiting for. And I’m very grateful, very thankful,” Sanju said after winning the Player of the Match award.

“And I’ve always had a very special journey with lots of ups and downs, but I’ve kept on doubting myself, kept on thinking, what if, what if, can I make it, can I make it? But I kept on believing, and thanks to the Lord Almighty for actually blessing me today. So I’m very happy,” he added.

Chasing 196, India stumbled early to 41-2 but stayed on course with the required rate. Samson steadied the innings alongside captain Suryakumar Yadav (18), adding 58 runs. Tilak Varma struck 27 off 15 before departing with 55 still needed, and despite Hardik Pandya’s dismissal for 17, Samson remained composed to finish the job with four balls to spare.

Earlier, Jason Holder (37* off 22) and Rovman Powell (34* off 19) shared an unbeaten 76-run stand to lift the West Indies, who had promoted Roston Chase to open. Chase made 40, while Shimron Hetmyer added 27. Varun Chakravarthy removed Shai Hope for 32, and Jasprit Bumrah struck key blows, though India dropped three catches.

In the day’s other match, South Africa beat Zimbabwe to set up a semi-final against New Zealand.
