New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner entered his name in the history books on Wednesday (February 25) by becoming the first cricketer from New Zealand to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in T20Is.

Santner, who has 136 wickets to his name in 132* matches played so far, needed 26 runs in New Zealand’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8s match against Sri Lanka at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo to complete 1000 runs in T20Is, and he achieved the objective by playing a knock of 47 runs from 26 balls.

Santner, who is leading New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2026, is the sixth player from ICC’s full member teams to complete the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in T20Is.

Former Bangladeshi captain and legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was the first cricketer in the world to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in T20Is. He finished his T20I career with 2551 runs and 149 wickets in 129 matches.

He was followed by Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi, Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza and India’s Hardik Pandya.

On Tuesday, during the England-Pakistan T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8s match in Pallekele, Shadab Khan also joined the elite club. Shadab has scored 1002 runs and picked up 123 wickets in 123 T20I matches for the Men in Green.

In the Super 8s match against Sri Lanka in Colombo, Santner added 84 runs from 47 balls for the seventh wicket with Cole McConchie (31* from 23 balls). The partnership of 84 runs between New Zealand skipper and Cole McConchie helped Kiwis post a total of 168/7 in 20 overs, and it also helped Santner and McConchie break the record for the highest partnership for the seventh wicket in a T20 World Cup match, which was previously held by Steve Smith and Michael Hussey of Australia.

Hussey and Smith added 74 runs for the seventh wicket in the 2010 T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown on May 5, 2010.
