Mumbai Police have made elaborate security arrangements ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections scheduled for January 15. Polling will take place across all 227 wards in the metropolis

on Thursday, while counting of votes will be held on Friday.

In a press release, the city police said that Mumbai has been put on high alert and security arrangements have been made to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election. The arrangements are being implemented on the directions of the Police Commissioner and under the direct supervision of the Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order).

Police said that 10 Additional Commissioners of Police, 33 Deputy Commissioners of Police, 84 Assistant Commissioners of Police, over 3,000 police officers and more than 25,000 police personnel would be deployed across the city on polling day.

Additional forces, including the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), Quick Response Teams (QRTs), Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads (BDDS), reserve police and home guards, will be deployed in sensitive and hyper-sensitive areas.

The Mumbai Police have appealed to citizens to cooperate and report any emergency, suspicious activity or law-and-order issue by calling the emergency helpline numbers 100 or 112.

Traffic Restrictions

Meanwhile, the Traffic Police have announced temporary traffic diversions and restrictions in parts of Dadar (West) and Worli due to election-related arrangements.

In Dadar (West), an election office and strong room have been set up at Dr Antonia D’Silva High School on Rao Bahadur S K Bole Marg. Distribution of polling materials will take place from January 13 to January 15, while Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be stored there after polling ends at 6 pm on January 15. Vote counting at the venue will be held on January 16.

Traffic restrictions will be in force in parts of Dadar from 8 am on January 14 till 11 pm on January 16. Entry will be restricted to local residents only on stretches of Rao Bahadur S. K. Bole Marg, Ashok Vruksh Road and Ranade Road. Parking will not be allowed on these roads during the period, and motorists have been advised to follow traffic diversions.

In Worli, vote counting will take place at the BMC Engineering Hub on Dr E. Moses Road. Traffic restrictions, including no-entry and no-parking measures, will be enforced on Dr E. Moses Road between Worli Naka and Dainik Shivner Marg from 5 am on January 16 till midnight. Only essential services, emergency vehicles and Election Commission-authorised vehicles will be permitted.
