A year after an outbreak of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) triggered concern in Maharashtra’s Pune district, the rare neurological disorder has resurfaced, prompting health authorities to activate precautionary

measures once again. The district reported its first GBS-related death of the year after a 51-year-old man from Neera in Purandar subdivision died during treatment.

The deceased, identified as Mansoor Syed, had been undergoing treatment when he suffered complications. According to officials from the district health department, Syed was also suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure. While he showed symptoms consistent with GBS, doctors said complications arising from his underlying conditions led to a heart attack during treatment.

The death has put the Pune district health administration on high alert. Emergency surveillance measures have been initiated in Neera and surrounding areas, with officials ordering the collection and testing of water samples and launching house-to-house health surveys. Authorities have also begun inspections of private water purification centres to rule out possible contamination sources.

Health officials said another suspected GBS patient from the Neera area received timely treatment and has since recovered. Kasturi Patel, 46, was discharged after making a full recovery, the department confirmed.

Medical experts note that Guillain-Barre Syndrome affects the nervous system and is not directly contagious. However, infections caused by contaminated food or water can trigger immune responses that may damage the nerves. As a precaution, the administration has intensified sanitary surveillance and water quality testing, including samples from wells and public taps, in an attempt to identify any potential source of infection.

Health workers have been visiting households in the village to monitor symptoms and reassure residents, even as authorities work to prevent panic in the area.
