New Delhi: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has assured the Indian Air Force (IAF) that five Tejas Mk1A aircraft will be delivered by June this year,

with all major concerns raised by the service addressed, defence sources told News9.

However, the aircraft will undergo a detailed review before formal acceptance. Induction into the IAF will depend on the outcome of this evaluation and whether the jets meet the Air Staff Qualitative Requirements (ASQR).

\n\n

“There are still some issues that need to be addressed. We will accept the aircraft only when all our concerns are resolved,” an IAF official said.

Concerns Over Key Systems

The concerns reportedly relate to the radar, Electronic Warfare (EW) suite, and weapon integration. HAL, however, has maintained that five Tejas Mk1A aircraft are fully ready for delivery, with major systems — including the radar, EW suite, and weapon integration — completed and compliant with requirements.

On October 17, 2025, HAL conducted the first flight of the Tejas Mk1A prototype from its Nashik facility, marking a significant milestone in the programme.

Delays and Engine Supply Issues

The Tejas Mk-1A is a 4.5-generation, all-weather, multi-role indigenous fighter developed by HAL for high-threat aerial environments. It represents a significant advancement in India’s next-generation air power capability. However, the programme has faced repeated delays, largely due to engine supply constraints.

Originally planned for induction in 1995, the indigenous Tejas received operational clearance only in 2011. Although several Mk1A jets are now ready, deliveries have been impacted by delays in engine supplies from General Electric (GE).

In 2021, HAL signed a ₹5,375 crore contract with GE Aerospace for 99 F404 engines to power the Mk1A variant. However, engine deliveries have been delayed, affecting production timelines.

Production Capacity and Orders

HAL currently holds orders for 180 Tejas Mk1A aircraft — an initial order of 83 jets followed by a subsequent order for 97 aircraft.

In an earlier interview with News9, HAL Chairman and Managing Director Dr D.K. Sunil said, “We will be able to complete the first order of 83 aircraft by 2031–2032 and deliver all of them by then.”

He added that nine aircraft have already been built.

According to Dr Sunil, HAL’s production capacity currently stands at 24 aircraft per year. “We also effectively have a fourth production line in the private sector, where we are sourcing fuselage assemblies. By 2027–28, we will have a capacity of 33 aircraft per year. We have invested nearly ₹1,000 crore so far to establish these multiple facilities,” he said.

While HAL remains confident about meeting its commitments, the final induction of the five aircraft due in June will hinge on the IAF’s technical review and clearance.
