New Delhi: The ePlane Company, incubated at IIT Madras, has announced the opening of a prototyping and testing facility at the Discovery Campus in Thaiyur.

The state-of-the-art facility spans 60,000 square feet, and is the first integrated plant in India dedicated to the serial production of electric aircraft. This signals a shift in India’s Urban Air Mobility sector from a design and concept stage to subscale porotypes and flight-ready hardware, as well as certification-grade fullscale prototyping. The facility was officially inaugurated by the Director of IIT Madras, V Kamakoti. The ePlane Company has ambitious goals of building the most compact air taxi in the world.

The e200X electric vertical take-off vertical landing (eVOTL) aircraft features a patented 8m x 10m footprint. The company is entering the full scale ground test vehicle (GTV) phase. The facility will support key development milestones, including tethered hover testing. It houses design, prototyping, integration and subsystem testing teams at a single location, and will serve as the engineering hub for passenger, relief and cargo eVOTLs. The site includes composite fabrication, electric powertrain assembly, avionics testing, and a dedicated ground test vehicle facility to support subsystem validation and full-scale development.

Digital Twin Modelling with Nvidia Omniverse

The ePlane Company also recently became the first electric aviation OEM in the region to use Nvidia Ombinverse for multi-physics digital twin modelling. ePlane has created a hyper-realistic digital twin of the e200x to validate flight physics, autonomy algorithms, sensor fusion and mission scenarios that are tedious to test physically. The e200x aircraft will also use state-of-the-art computing devices from Nvidia for critical on-board applications.
