New Delhi: The Donald Trump administration approved the ‘Russia sanctions bill’ on Friday, which proposes up to 500 per cent tariffs on major buyers of

crude from Moscow, as it is closely monitoring the developments.

In response, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, made a media briefing and highlighted that India’s position on its energy sources is well noted.

“We are aware of the proposed bill. We are carefully monitoring all related issues and developments connected with it. At the same time, I would like to say that, as far as energy sources are concerned, you are well aware of our approach,” Randhir Jaiswal stated.

Jaiswal reminded the Indian government of its position on purchasing oil from Russia despite being pressured by the Western.

“We take into account the conditions and environment in the global market, while also keeping in mind our imperative of ensuring that energy is made available at affordable prices to our 1.4 billion people. Based on these factors, we determine our strategy and policy,” he added.

The bill proposes crippling tariffs on countries that are purchasing oil from Russia and will target nations like India, China, and Brazil.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham stated that the bill would give Washington more edge over countries fueling Putin’s war machine by purchasing oil from Russia. The legislation could be taken up for a bipartisan vote as a diplomatic effort to end the war in Ukraine.

India and Russia shared a close bond as India showcased its national interests and global market conditions by purchasing Russian oil, but at the same time, it will continue to buy energy from wherever it is available at an attractive price, ensuring sanctions compliance and due diligence.

EAM S. Jaishankar defended the purchasing of Russian oil as India’s economic needs and energy security, and there is no political alignment with the decision.
