ingredient used in popular injections such as Wegovy and Ozempic. This development comes at a time when demand for weight loss drugs is soaring, yet access through prescriptions is still limited.

The weight loss nasal spray

Now, Chinese pharmaceutical company Shanghai Shiling Pharmaceutical has announced it is trialing a semaglutide nasal spray, with plans to complete global clinical studies by 2028. The firm told Reuters that the spray is designed for long-term use and is expected to cost less than existing injectable or tablet forms. It also said that once trials are completed, it hopes to move into major international drug markets.

What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide is described as a breakthrough discovery in obesity care. It suppresses appetite, triggers a sense of fullness, thereby supporting weight loss in patients. However, lifestyle changes are essential in the process. The cost factor continues to be a limitation in most cases. Drugmakers are now racing to find new ways to deliver semaglutide. Last month, a daily pill form of Wegovy launched in the United States, offering a lower-priced alternative for those who prefer not to inject.

How do nasal sprays work for weight loss?

The nasal spray approach, however, remains relatively new. Research into nasal semaglutide is still limited, and it is not yet clear whether it can match the effectiveness of injections. Some earlier studies suggest it may work by allowing the drug to be absorbed through the nasal mucosa—the lining inside the nose—potentially helping it reach the brain more directly. But large-scale evidence is still lacking.

At present, nasal semaglutide is not approved for use in the UK or the US, largely because safety testing and long-term data are still incomplete. The timing of the announcement is also significant. Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical giant behind Ozempic and Wegovy, is due to lose its semaglutide patent in China next month. Once that happens, rival firms will be able to produce their own legal “generic” versions of semaglutide.

Generic medicines contain the same active ingredient and are designed to work in the same way as branded drugs, although they may differ in appearance or contain different inactive ingredients. Typically, they cost far less—often 70 to 90 percent cheaper—and increased competition can force prices down across the market.
