$6.3 Billion Plan for AI, Hydrogen and Robots\n

\n The largest share of the investment is a 5.8 trillion won AI data centre equipped with 50,000 GPUs to support autonomous driving and robot learning, according to South Korea’s land ministry. Hyundai will also spend 1 trillion won on a water electrolysis facility producing 80 tons of green hydrogen a day and 1.3 trillion won on a solar plant to power the projects.\n

\n The facilities will be built in the Saemangeum area, about 270 kilometres southwest of Seoul. The project includes Hyundai’s first robot factory in South Korea, costing 400 billion won, to mass produce wearable robots and industrial and logistics machines and to develop a robot parts cluster.\n\n

\n Hyundai signed an investment agreement with seven government agencies after partnering with Nvidia Corp. in October to build a national physical AI cluster using Blackwell accelerators.\n

Atlas Robot Targets Factory Work\n

\n Hyundai plans to deploy Atlas for repetitive industrial tasks such as kitting vehicle components in 2028 and expand to more complex assembly work by 2030. The robot can lift up to 50 kilograms and operate in temperatures from −20°C to 40°C, allowing use in heavy manufacturing environments.\n

\n Humanoid robots use many of the same components as electric vehicles — batteries, electric motors, sensors and AI — giving automakers a manufacturing advantage in a market Morgan Stanley estimates could reach $5 trillion by 2050.\n\n

\n Hyundai has invested heavily in robotics since acquiring Boston Dynamics in 2021 and recruiting engineers from technology companies. \n Hyundai said robots produced at the new factory will connect to the AI data centre for continuous learning. At the investment ceremony, President Lee Jae Myung said the development would help transform the region into a future city where robots are widely used in daily life.\n\n
