Besides, selling in financial, bank and consumption stocks amid ongoing weakness in the rupee also added to the pressure in the markets. Stock Market Closing Today On Janaury 21, 2026 On Wednesday, Janaury 21, 2026, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex lost 270.84 points or 0.33 per cent to close at 81909.63. The NSE Nifty went down by 75 points or 0.30 per cent to close at 25157.50. The Nifty Bank index, which tracks the movement top 12 listed banks of the country, closed 603.90 points or 1.02 per cent down at 58,800.30. From the broader market, Nifty Midcap 100 index closed 1.14 per cent lower, while Nifty Smallcap 100 index settled 0.90 per cent down. Among sectoral indices, out of 19 indices, only two settled in green. Nifty Metal was the biggest gainer, which closed 0.57 per cent higher. Oil & Gas went up by 0.27 per cent. Nifty PSU Bank fell over 1.01 per cent, while Private Bank index declined 0.85 per cent. Pharma closed 0.60 per cent lower, while Auto and IT indices fell 0.29 per cent each. \"Domestic markets were gripped by volatility as global risk factors dampened sentiment. However, value buying towards the close helped the market recover some early losses. The weakening rupee and uncertainties surrounding trade ties may prolong this volatility,\" Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said.

Sensex Gainers and Losers Today

From Sensex pack, 13 constituents settled in green. Eternal, RIL, UltraTech Cement, Bharti Airtel and TCS were gainers on Sensex. ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, L&T, Axis Bank, SBI, BEL and Kotak Mahindra Bank were among laggards.\n

Nifty 50: Nifty Gainers And Losers Today

From Nifty 50, 23 shares moved upwards and settled in green. Eternal, IndiGo, Max Healthcare, Hindalco, JSW Steel and Grasim Industries were among top gainers. ICICI Bank, Trent, Tata Consumer Products, BEL, HDFC Life and Axis Bank were among top laggards.\n

\nForeign institutional investors offloaded equities worth Rs 2,938.33 crore on Tuesday, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought stocks worth Rs 3,665.69 crore, according to exchange data.\n

\nOn Tuesday, the 30-share BSE Sensex tumbled 1,065.71 points or 1.28 per cent to settle at 82,180.47. The Nifty tanked 353 points or 1.38 per cent to end at 25,232.50.\n
