India Economic Conclave 2025: CP Gurnani, former CEO and MD of Tech Mahindra, shared his perspectives on the future of India’s IT sector, touching on themes

ranging from AI adoption, cybersecurity and automation to the evolving H-1B visa landscape. He outlined how Indian IT companies are transitioning into hybrid service-product platforms, using AI to drive efficiencies while navigating global talent and regulatory challenges. Responding to a question on whether companies are making incremental investments in cybersecurity or treating it as part of their overall IT spending, Gurnani said that in the case of medium to large enterprises globally, the figure would be upwards of 200 million. \"If I look at what is called CSOs, the Chief Cybersecurity Officers, I think the last count was about 50,000. So, 200 million businesses could be medium to large or small to large; we have only 50,000 CSOs. That means only 50,000 people will be running a budget for cybersecurity.\" \"The rest of them would be run by the CFO, CIO or the CTO or maybe the business owner. I'm not saying they don't spend money, but that budget could be somewhere else,\" he added.
