The Legend of Holika and Prahlad

Everyone knows the Holika and Prahlad story; that’s the heart of this celebration. It’s all about truth and goodness winning over evil. The story goes back to Demon King Hiranyakashipu. His son Prahlad was a devout follower of Lord Vishnu. While everyone was praising Hiranyakashipu, his own son’s reluctance to worship him got him furious. No matter what the king tried, Prahlad wouldn’t stop. So, after a bunch of failed attempts to get rid of his son, Hiranyakashipu turned to his sister, Holika, for help. Holika had this special power; fire couldn’t touch her. So she sat with Prahlad on a burning pyre, planning for him to be destroyed. But thanks to Vishnu’s blessing, Prahlad walked away unharmed, and Holika, for all her powers, was reduced to ashes. That’s the story behind Holika Dahan: the big bonfire on Holi night. The Eternal Love Story Of Radha and Krishna

This narration characterises the eternal love of Radha and Krishna since Krishna was of a very different complexion, and he was very conscious of his dark blue complexion, so he requested his mother, Yashoda, to give him some pieces of advice. Yashoda was only proposing that Krishna paint Radha in any colour he desired. Krishna playfully coloured the skin of Radha to his colour and expressed his love for her. Once it was blazing, the kids ran around it, laughing, drumming, clapping, shouting insults, and causing as much chaos as they could. The noise and teasing worked. Dhundhi couldn’t take it and ran off. It is an episode of the story of the Holi festival that resulted in the act of screaming after setting fire to the Holi to help us get rid of the evil spirits in our lives. It also promoted the carefree, mischievous, and prankful Holi festivity.\n

Kamadeva’s Sacrifice

After Sati died, Shiva was lost in grief. He retreated into deep meditation, shutting himself off from everything. The world started falling apart since Shiva wasn’t there to keep things in balance. Sati came back, reborn as Parvati, hoping to draw Shiva out. She tried everything, but nothing worked. In the end, she asked Kamadeva, the god of love, for help. Kamadeva knew the risk, but he fired his love arrow right at Shiva’s heart. It worked. Shiva woke up, but he was furious. He opened his third eye and burnt Kamadeva to ashes on the spot. But Shiva's anger faded when he saw Parvati, and he finally fell in love with her, bringing the world back to life. People say Kamadeva was burnt on Holi, so in southern India, he’s worshipped for his sacrifice.\n

Holika Dahan and Ganga

Another interesting connection is between the story of the Holika Dahan and the reason behind the fall of the river Ganga to Earth is the following: Young Prahlad was believed to have been cooled in the waters of the Ganga that had been dropped on Earth by King Bhagiratha.
