Preliminary laboratory examinations of select products from the spice manufacturer have highlighted significant issues regarding their safety. These tests have reportedly identified levels of bacteria and pesticide residues that exceed the maximum permissible limits set by regulatory bodies. The findings suggest a potential breach in the stringent safety protocols expected from established food brands, prompting a closer look at their manufacturing and quality control processes. Specifically, a sample of Garam Masala from the brand was found to contain two types of pesticides, acetamiprid and azoxystrobin, at concentrations surpassing the limits stipulated by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Concurrently, this same sample exhibited elevated bacterial counts. Another product, Kitchen King Masala, reportedly contained similar bacterial groups along with three different pesticide residues that were also above the recommended thresholds. The presence of Enterobacteriaceae, a group of bacteria known to cause food contamination, was also noted in one of the tested products. These findings are particularly noteworthy given the recent similar scrutiny faced by other major food brands regarding coliform bacteria contamination, emphasizing a growing concern within the food industry about maintaining product integrity and consumer safety.

Past Ethylene Oxide Scare

This is not the first time the brand has encountered significant scrutiny regarding product quality. A couple of years prior, their Fish Curry Masala was at the center of a major investigation due to concerns over Ethylene Oxide (ETO). ETO is a chemical considered unsuitable for human consumption and had led to alerts being issued by several countries regarding the use of spices from this particular Indian brand. While ETO is commonly employed for fumigating agricultural produce to mitigate microbial contamination, and its use is permitted for sterilizing spices in places like Singapore, its presence above certain limits is a global concern. In contrast to the current findings, a thorough testing initiative by the FSSAI in 2022 had cleared over a dozen spice samples from this brand, finding no traces of ethylene oxide. This earlier extensive testing, conducted at NABL-accredited laboratories, had also examined 300 spice samples from other brands, similarly finding no presence of ETO.
